Assistant Teacher

Anitha Kannan started learning Bharat Natyam in 1978, at the age of three, in India.

She was learning under Mrs. Teresa, in the city of Tuticorin, in South Tamil Nadu. Alongside Bharat Natyam, she also learned Snake dance, Kurathi, and folk Dances. She gave multiple stage performances in classical and folk dances, in her childhood days. Later she moved to Chennai in 1986, and continued to be trained under Mrs. Prabha Natrajan.

Then she took a 17 year break, finished her Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering, got married to Kannan Sivarajan, and had two beautiful children. Later she moved around, in India and a few places in the USA. The first time she saw, Navanritya group perform and heard about the various classical forms of dances taught by Anwesha, her desire and dream to dance and learn more started to take shape.

She joined Navanritya Dance Academy in 2006, and trained as part of the senior group “Mirage”. The Navanritya form of dance lets her explore a lot of dance forms and keeps her creativity alive. This is the main reason; she still wants to continue her training as a senior dancer. Another personal reason, because the group is so well bonded. Irrespective of age, everyone is like a great big family, helping each other out. The Academy gives her an opportunity, to pursue the common interest of dancing shared by all members, alongside doing charity work, with the talent that everyone acquires.

“Knowledge learned is not challenged enough until you share it.” Beginning of 2008, Anitha got the chance to start teaching the youngest group of students "Blooming Buds". She loves and enjoys working and teaching the children. While teaching the kids, she learns a lot from them.

Anitha quotes “Dancing is a great pleasure. But, seeing your students enjoy and dance gives me immense pleasure. Giving back something to the community and teaching them the rich dance forms of India makes me to feel proud.”

Today she continues to train as part of the Mirage Group, in Bharatnatyam and Navanritya,  under the guidance of Anwesha Dutta. She is a very talented dancer, quick learner and an extremely patient teacher.  Lovingly Mirage Group refers to her "The Clock Work". She never misses a step, and is forever willing to help the other students, catch up. She is Anwesha's right hand, and a a blessing in disguise. In Anwesha's absence, she single handedly manages all the administrative tasks, co-ordination and facilitation, to ensure, the classes take place on time.

Currently Anitha is a full time mom, taking care of her two children, son "Nikilesh"(8 yrs.old) , and daughter "Nishitha" (4 yrs.old).

Sridevi Jakka is the teacher for Dancing Fairies.
